This simple rhyme, which has opened many a Mother Goose collection, I take from an 1817 tome... I'm not sure this is the earliest, but given that the earliest collections of nursery rhymes were not attributed to 'Mother Goose' until after they started to be popular, this rhyme was likely created after the idea of the character of Mother Goose had already become well-known.
